Cluster Gallery 1997-2002

As we lead our daily lives, our planet Earth rotates around our Sun cradled within the Milky Way galaxy we belong to. Nightly, amateur astronomers around the world peer into the sky with their telescopes and CCD cameras.

We encounter a variety of globular and open collections of stars.

These are the many star clusters that I have seen and imaged from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, so far...

M2, M3, M4, M5, M9, M10

13 billion years old, 175 light-years in diameter with 150,000 stars
Located 1º west of Antares, it is 12.2 billion years old, one of the closest, smallest and sparest c
believed to contain over 500,000 stars
1st globular cluster image with the MX5-C Starlight Xpress

M11, M12, M13, M14, M15, M19

One of the most dense globulars in
the Milk Way
with ancient stars about 12 billion years old
Mono image converted from the original color

M22, M23, M25, M26, M29, M30

First light with HX916, resized from original 650 x 515 image

M34, M35, M36, M37, M38, M44

80 stars with mags to 9, f/3.3 focal reducer

M46, M52, M53, M54, M62, M68

NGC 2438 planetary ring nebula in foreground,
at 3,300 light-years @ mag 10.0
Most distant Messier clusters. Closest extragalactic globular, belongs to Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy.

M71, M72, M73, M79, M80, M92

Mags 11 to 16 stars, immersed in rich Milky Way star background and nebula, 29 light-years diameter
Converted color image, it is one of more remote globular clusters, lying well beyond Galactic center
12.5 billion years old and one of the densest globular clusters
in our Milky Way
Contains over 300,000 stars

M93, M103

1st image with auto-focuser
cluster with over 60 stars with mags of 8 to 13
Large cluster rich in stars of magnitude 10 to 11
